Hikizome 引染め

Hikizome is one of Japanese traditional method of dyeing kimono.

1.Characteristics of Hikizome

Hikizome is the essential technical process of dyeing the base color of kimono fabric with various color gradations using a brush on the status of hanging it between two poles as the photos shown below.

2.Production processes of Kimono

1)Shitae 下絵:Laying the initial designs

2)Itomeoki 糸目置き: Drawing the itome(fine line) by masking the line with a paste

3)Norifuse 糊伏せ: Drawing resist paste for masking the designs

4)Jiire 地入れ: Making the fabric’s base for dyeing by Funori(a glue plant)

5)Hikizome 引染め: Dyeing the fabric with color gradations

6)Yuzen 友禅: Washing the paste off the fabric

7)Mushimizumoto 蒸し水元: Steaming & Washing

8)Shitate 仕立て: Making kimono
